A lot of recipes call for ‘onions’ without specifying which type, and it’s often easiest to stick to tried and true white onions, but is that the healthiest choice to make?
A recent study published in Food Research International finds that red onions are most effective at promoting health, compared to other onions, due to their higher levels of the antioxidants quercetin and anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is one of the main providers of colour to fruit and vegetables, so it is logical that red onions, with their darker colour, would have the most of this important molecule. Whilst these antioxidants are readily found in all onion varieties, they are especially concentrated in darker varieties, such as red onions.
Anthocyanins are water-soluble pigments that can appear red, purple or blue, and can be found in abundance in blueberries, raspberries, black rice and aubergines, as well as in many flowers and autumn leaves.
It must be noted, however, that the benefits of antioxidants in the diet haven’t been wholly causally linked to reduction of cancerous cells in humans, but they aren’t harmful and might actually make us healthier, so piling up the red onions is always a good idea.
