Simply put, black garlic is an aged version of its raw white counterpart, and it is believed it may bring even more benefits to our health.

To make black garlic, fresh garlic is taken and fermented. This fermentation process is what gives the cloves their black colour, and it also makes them taste more delicate, with not such a strong garlic flavour. The fermentation process needs to take place in a warm, humidity-controlled space, where the garlic is left for several weeks. It can be aged for up to 60 days, but it will be ready to use after 3 weeks.

While it may not be widely known, black garlic has been around for a long time. While its origins are unclear, in Asian countries it has been used for centuries, for both flavour and medicinal purposes.

Some of its benefits include:

  • Stronger immune system – It is packed with antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and helps fight free radicals.
  • It can help stabilise blood sugar – Tests have shown that black garlic can help prevent complications related to obesity and diabetes.
  • Good for your brain – Inflammation is partly responsible for some brain diseases, and black garlic can help reduce this.
  • Healthy heart – Tests have shown that black garlic can help repair heart muscle damage and reduce the risk of heart diseases.

But is it better for you than white garlic? Truthfully, the important thing is to include garlic in your diet. Both versions bring benefits, but black garlic tastes different and has a sticky consistency. This makes it a perfect healthy addition to a diet where people want to enjoy all the benefits of garlic but do not enjoy its garlicky flavour.

And the best part? You can swap white garlic for black garlic (and vice-versa) in any situation. Because it is rising in popularity, black garlic is now easier to find (and even make, if you would like to make your own).
