Have way too many onions? Perhaps you grow them yourself and have not been using them quickly enough? Or you found a bargain at a supermarket and ended up buying more than you needed? The good news is you do not need to worry about these onions going bad and wasting them. With the proper storage technique, they will last for a long time. Cut onions are the most difficult to save and tend not to last very long, but even these can last if stored properly.

Different methods will work better for certain types of onions, but, when it comes to storage, onions can essentially be separated in two: dry onions and high moisture content onions.

When it comes to onions with high moisture content, such as sweet onions for example, it is best to wrap each individual onion in a paper towel and keep them in the refrigerator. Because these do not last as long, we recommend using these first. Even when using this technique, which helps prolong the onion’s shelf life, these still need to be consumed within a few weeks.

Dry onions contain sulfurous compounds that help preserve them, and they can be stored for many months. Storing them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space can help maximise their shelf life. Also avoid storing them near other fresh produce as many vegetables and fruits will absorb the onion’s flavour.

When it comes to cut onions, they do not last as long, but it is still perfectly safe to store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator, for up to 7 days. Another option is to freeze the onions for later use. These won’t be as crisp when you are ready to use them, so we recommend saving these for warm dishes.
