The Vidalia Onion is internationally known, and each spring since 1978 the city of Vidalia (Georgia, USA) celebrates the harvest of these sweet onions. The city is proud of its onion-based heritage, holding an annual Vidalia Onion Festival, and even having a dedicated Vidalia Onion Museum!

The festival is known for its events, such as the Culinary Extravaganza, Vidalia Onion Pageants, Carnival, Children’s Parade, and local dance performances. Even fireworks make an appearance!

As well as their unique sweetness, the Vidalia Onion is also known for its flat shape.

The secret to the sweetness of the Vidalia Onion is said to come from the soil in the area being sandy, whilst having low levels of sulphur, combined with milder than average winter temperatures, and a steady level of precipitation year-round. The harvesting and selling of these onions is controlled by the Vidalia Onion Committee; because they are more prone to bruising and rotting than other types of onions, the committee ensures that all farmers get the most from their yield, and protects buyers and consumers from acquiring an onion which is of lower quality than expected.
